building a brand
nightmaker studios.
Nightmaker Studios was a music technology college I co-founded in 2010 alongside James Dunne and Brendan Sutton, providing cutting-edge training in electronic music production and sound engineering. I led the design and branding, developed the curriculum, and fostered a creative community where students could collaborate and grow. With state-of-the-art facilities and competitive courses, we trained over 200 students, offering a hands-on, industry-focused learning experience.
the idea.
Nightmaker Studios was founded to provide high-quality, affordable music technology education in Ireland. The vision was to create a hands-on learning environment where students could access professional studios, collaborate, and develop industry skills. We offered competitive courses in electronic music production, sound engineering, and advanced music technology, all taught by experienced professionals. The studio was designed to foster creativity, with facilities that included classrooms, professional studios, and community spaces. Nightmaker Studios aimed to build a supportive community where aspiring musicians and producers could learn, network, and access real-world production tools and techniques.
Meteor award
Winning the Meteor Music Prize in 2010 was a defining moment in my career. It validated my work in music production and gave me the confidence to take the next step—founding Nightmaker Studios.
The recognition opened doors and solidified my belief that there was a demand for high-quality music education. I wanted to create a space where others could learn the skills that had shaped my own journey, providing access to professional tools and an inspiring community.
That win fueled my passion to share knowledge and foster a new generation of music producers and engineers.
research
qualitative & quantitative
The research for Nightmaker Studios’ business plan was thorough and multi-faceted, aimed at ensuring the success of the music technology college. Our qualitative research took place at the Pavilions Shopping Centre in Swords, where we interacted directly with potential students over a number of weekends, allowing them to test music technology equipment and express interest. This approach was highly effective, generating significant interest and potential course fees of €31,000 over a number of weekends.
Quantitative research was equally important. We analyzed the success of competitors like The Sound Training Centre and Pulse College, which boasted high attendance numbers. They generated substantial revenue through courses in Electronic Music Production, DJ & Music Technology, and Sound Engineering, with over €343,000 earned in just six months. This showed us there was a strong demand for music technology education in Ireland, and we aimed to capture this by offering something even more competitive.
To set ourselves apart, we focused on providing more value at a lower cost, ensuring our courses were priced below the competition while still offering superior instruction and facilities. We hired reputable teachers from The Sound Training Centre to give our students the best possible learning experience, further ensuring the quality of our courses.
This comprehensive research demonstrated both the demand for music technology training and how Nightmaker Studios could meet that need by offering competitive pricing, industry-leading instructors, and a strong focus on community building within our facilities. These insights formed the foundation of our business plan and ultimately contributed to the success of the studio.
Branding design
by brendan, russell, James, Lynda
The branding for Nightmaker Studios was a comprehensive and deeply collaborative effort between myself, Brendan Sutton, and James Dunne. We took inspiration from the bold, colorful design of the Nintendo 64 logo, creating a strong, cohesive brand identity that was reflected in every aspect of the studio. Beyond the logo and website, we designed brochures, t-shirts, and other promotional materials, all aligned with the branding’s vibrant color palette.
We even took it a step further by matching the interior color scheme of the studio to the brand, ensuring that every space—from the classrooms to the studios—echoed the same creative energy. To enhance the atmosphere, James’s partner Lynda provided hand-painted portraits of famous musicians, which became a defining feature of the studio decor. This attention to detail not only reinforced the brand but also created a welcoming, inspiring environment for students and collaborators alike.
Designing the interior
The interior design of Nightmaker Studios was all about extending the brand’s identity into the physical space, creating an environment that reflected the red, blue, and black colour scheme used in our branding. Our goal was to make the studio feel both luxurious and high-tech, ensuring that every space—from the classrooms to the chill-out areas—aligned with the brand.
We colour-coded the two studios: the red studio, geared towards band recording with a live room, and the blue studio, focused on electronic music production. Black and red leather couches, flat-screen TVs, and Xboxes in the communal areas helped create a comfortable, collaborative atmosphere.
Lynda’s artwork further brought the space to life by incorporating the brand’s color palette, tying everything together into a modern, cohesive, and creative environment that left a lasting impression on anyone who walked through the doors.
Partnerships
multiple touchpoints
Nightmaker Studios partnered with prominent DJ David De Valera to offer a six-week beginners DJing course. The course was designed to teach aspiring DJs everything from basic setup to the art of mixing in key. Divided into three distinct parts, the course covered all the essential elements needed to reach one’s potential as a DJ. David De Valera, known for his residency at the Pod nightclub in Dublin and numerous successful releases, brought over 15 years of experience to the course, providing expert insight and instruction. This partnership brought in guest DJs, enriching the learning experience at Nightmaker Studios.
Nightmaker Studios launched a Groupon promotion offering a full-day introduction to music production for €49. The deal showcased our top-tier facilities, including the B.L.U.E. and R.E.D. studios and a music lab equipped with iMacs, MIDI keyboards, and a variety of software. Over three classes, students explored genres like techno, electro, and dubstep, learning music theory, sound engineering, and the steps to create a track from scratch. The promotion also highlighted the expertise of our award-winning team and created a buzz around our unique teaching approach, providing an accessible entry point for aspiring music producers.
In 2011, Nightmaker Studios partnered with Lee Cullen, founder of Theplayer.ie, to help produce The Splitscreen Show, a gaming-focused series that aimed to expand the media offerings of Theplayer.ie. This partnership led to the creation of Unit 25 Productions, through which we aimed to produce TV-quality shows on minimal budgets.
The Splitscreen Show ran for one season on DCTV in Dublin and featured interviews with high-profile figures in the gaming industry, including Dan Greenawalt of Turn 10, Patrick Bach of DICE, Richard Lemarchand of Naughty Dog, and BioWare founders Dr. Greg Zeschuck and Dr. Ray Muzyka. It also highlighted local developers like PopCap, Open Emotion Studios, and BitSmith, showcasing a blend of both international and Irish gaming talent.
Our role extended beyond just production; we also provided the music, edited the audio, and supported the show’s production. The entire project was designed to showcase the capabilities of Nightmaker Studios and Unit 25 Productions as a full-service production house. By covering the video game industry and delivering TV-quality content, we aimed to gain exposure and build a reputation for producing high-quality, low-budget media projects.
Nightmaker Studios also partnered with Native Instruments, securing discounted access to industry-leading products like Maschine and Traktor. This partnership allowed us to equip our studios with top-tier production tools while extending the same discount to our students. The collaboration not only enhanced the hands-on learning experience but also gave students affordable access to professional-grade music production and DJing software, reinforcing our commitment to providing value and real-world tools in their education.
Delivering the courses
At Nightmaker Studios, our courses were designed to provide a hands-on, immersive learning experience for students at every level. Each course was delivered by industry professionals with years of experience in music production, DJing, and sound engineering. We combined classroom instruction with practical studio time, allowing students to immediately apply what they learned using state-of-the-art equipment like Native Instruments’ Maschine and Traktor.
In addition, students had access to professional-grade software, iMacs, and MIDI keyboards in our music production lab. We also offered follow-up tutorial videos, ensuring students could revisit key concepts outside of class and solidify their skills.
At Nightmaker Studios, we were proud to offer a top-tier educational experience led by some of the most respected names in the industry. Our team included Les Stapleton, a master of sound engineering and production; Dave De Valera, one of Ireland’s leading DJs and producers, known for performing alongside icons like Richie Hawtin and Joris Voorn; and Phil Byrne, aka Phil Misk, one half of the renowned breaks act Splitloop and a prolific remixer for artists like Kelis and The Prodigy. I also brought my own expertise in music production and multimedia design to the table. Together, we delivered courses that gave students hands-on experience and insights from the forefront of the music industry, ensuring they learned from the very best.
At Nightmaker Studios, we went beyond the classroom to ensure our students had the best learning experience. For every class, we created detailed video tutorials, allowing students to revisit lessons and practice at their own pace. These tutorials provided ongoing support, giving students the flexibility to reinforce their skills and knowledge outside of the studio environment. This approach ensured that learning was never limited to class time, offering valuable after-class resources to help students excel on their own terms.
Looking back on our time at Nightmaker Studios, I’m incredibly grateful for the journey we took and the amazing people we met along the way. The connections we built, the collaborations we fostered, and the music we created together left a lasting impact on both myself and everyone involved. It was more than just a place to learn—it was a community where creativity thrived, and we were all able to grow as artists and individuals. I’m proud of everything we accomplished, and I’ll always cherish the memories and friendships made during that time.
